This podcast is freaking SWEEEET! Thank you for making it. By the way, Star Ocean First Departure is a remake of an SNES game not a PS1 game. And it's opening sequence has the best graphics and SO MUCH voice acting for an SNES game. It's mind-blowing technology.

Actually, it would be pretty sweet having the different races in your party. Kinglons with their crazy hand held weapons. The Romulans and Vulcans could fill the Geth/Quarian space. I definitely think it would be a commercial success. I imagine Trek fans are STARVED for a decent Trek game.

Thanks for the replies, gentlemen! I don't always have time to post my thoughts here (working) but rest assured that I listen to every single RPG Love podcast, even back when they were a Carousel Podcast series.

I will say that, regardless of being a Trekkie or not, a Trek game with the same flavor as something like KOTOR (but without any Star Wars-yness i.e. mystic powers and lightsabers) would be a sales success, and draw in users who don't care at all about the Trek brand. However, publishers would have to resist the urge to license it to the new Trek movies and program Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto into it. Best to be a simple progression of the universe that the tv shows built.

I've said too much about my pipedream here. Sorry, and thanks for the podcast!

That's funny I never realized that verbage existed in me. But then again I do have a tendency to combine words and make them up.

I think Star Trek would be an excellent license project for Bioware but I probably wouldn't play it because I'm not much of a Trekkie. :/

I think I own a couple of the Ultima's actually (Underworld 1 and 2 in that Interplay pack and whatever one GOG gave away for free a while back). Never played any of them though.

I love Star Control 2 without reserve. There's a fan fixed version that's free to over at http://sc2.sourceforge.net/

A Star Trek BioWare game sounds like it would be pretty cool, actually. Might be a perfect fit for BioWare's space sensibilities. I'd play that game :D

I've never played Class of Heroes, so I can't really recommend it. I've heard it's great, but requires some time to really get the most out of it. You have a ton of great games to play on your PSP otherwise, agreed. And I should put another plug in for Persona 3 Portable :P

Thoughts, PART 2:

Banner Saga looks turbo interesting. A tactical RPG with hand-animated characters and story? Very yes. Hopefully the porject picks up enough notice to have a PS3/PSP release, as I'm not a fan of gaming on a PC (for the same reasons as you, Boston).

The original Class of Heroes is on sale on PSN right now. Would you recommend a purchase? I probably shouldn't ask, since I have LOH: Trails in the Sky, ClaDun, KH: Birth By Sleep, Ys Seven, and FFIV: Complete Collection all in my PSP backlog. Should probably play these games I OWN before buying anything else.

THE END

Thoughts:

What would you think if Bioware purchased the rights to make a Star Trek RPG in the style of Mass Effect? Stay true to the "spirit" of Trek, but build on Mass Effect's mechanics. Because Star Trek isn't violent by nature, it would be a great way to go back to a more RPG style game, create something of "Bioware quality," and have the combined brand power of Bioware and Star Trek drive the sales. This is something that should happen, I think.

Pedantic thought: "RPG Games" is redundant. Punch Musim when he says it! ;)

Interestingly, Ultima: Exodus on the NES was the first RPG I ever remember playing. I was around 10 years old. I hated it. However, I know I must have had SOME experience with RPGs previously, as I remember my first thought when starting the game was "This isn't one of those stupid games where you just stand around and pick things from menus, is it?" But I don't remember any RPGs in my life before Ultima: Exodus (Zelda is not an RPG). I have never gone back to any Ultima game since.
Now that I think about it, Ultima: Exodus is almost like a great-great-grandfather of The Elder Scrolls series. A lot of similarities between the two.

I don't know anything about either Star Control or Devil Survivor, but Star Control sounded way more interesting.

Taking a break at 1:04, FF7 talk. Will continue later!
